Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass, specifically Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is a type of weight-loss surgery that alters the digestive system to help people with severe obesity lose weight. This procedure is typically recommended for individuals who have not been able to achieve substantial weight loss through diet and exercise and who have serious health problems related to obesity, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.
Here’s a breakdown of how gastric bypass surgery works: Creation of a Small Stomach Pouch: The surgeon divides the stomach into a small upper section and a larger bottom section. The upper section, which is the new, smaller stomach pouch, can hold only about an ounce of food. This restriction significantly reduces the amount of food one can consume.

Bypassing a Portion of the Small Intestine: The small stomach pouch is then connected directly to a part of the small intestine called the Roux limb. This allows the food to bypass most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum) and go directly into the mid-section of the small intestine (jejunum).

Malabsorption and Hormonal Changes: Because the food bypasses a portion of the small intestine, fewer calories and nutrients are absorbed. Additionally, the change in the digestive process affects gut hormones, which helps to promote a feeling of fullness, reduce appetite, and improve blood sugar control.
